The Heelers are initially called to a school disturbance between two boys. The instigator, Sam Roper, is cautioned and sent home with his parents Colin and Jane Roper. But later an incident at the Roper household leads the Heelers to believe that Jane is a victim of domestic abuse. Rose's objectivity to the case is tested in light of her ex-husband Jeff also working at Mt. Thomas. The next day Colin Roper is found dead and it later transpires that he was the victim and not Jane. The revelation leads Rose into confessing that Jeff is still abusing her.

The man is identified as Billy Peters, a good friend of Nick and it leads to an investigation which causes intense internal problems. Meanwhile, P.J. investigates a suspected robbery at the local veterinary surgery.
